What do high or low levels of sodium in urine indicate

What do high or low levels of sodium in urine indicate?
And are sodium levels in urine affected by diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus or Bright's disease? Thanks :)

Diabetes can effect the level of sodium A test for sodium in the urine is a 24-hour test or a one-time (spot) test that checks how much sodium is in the urine. Sodium is both an electrolyte and a mineral. It helps keep the water (the amount of fluid inside and outside the body's cells) and electrolyte balance of the body. Sodium is also important in how nerves and muscles work. Most of the sodium in the body (about 85%) is found in blood and lymph fluid. Sodium levels in the body are partly controlled by a hormone called aldosterone, which is made by the adrenal glands. Aldosterone levels tell the kidneys when to hold sodium in the body instead of passing it in the urine. (See an illustration of the adrenal glands or the kidneys.) Small amounts of sodium are also lost through the skin when you sweat. Most foods have sodium naturally in them or as an ingredient in cooking. Sodium is found in table salt as sodium chloride or in baking soda as sodium bicarbonate. Many medicines and other products also have sodium in them, including laxatives, aspirin, mouthwash, and toothpaste. Too much sodium in the diet may raise blood pressure in some people. For those who have high blood pressure, eating foods with a lot of sodium makes their chance of heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage higher. Heart failure gets worse when too much sodium is eaten. It increases the amount of water the body holds in and this causes swelling of the legs and hands. Some people have problems when they eat more than 4,000 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day. Low sodium levels are uncommon and most often occur as a side effect of taking medicines that make you urinate more, such as diuretics. Severe diarrhea or vomiting or heavy sweating may also cause low sodium levels. A test for sodium in the urine is a 24-hour test or a one-time (spot) test that checks how much sodium is in the urine. Sodium is both an electrolyte and a mineral. Sodium in 24-hour urine collection Normal: 40–220 milliequivalents (mEq)/day or 40–220 millimoles (mmol) (SI units) Sodium in one-time urine sample Normal: Greater than 20 milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L) Many conditions can affect sodium levels. Your doctor will talk with you about any abnormal results that may be related to your symptoms and medical history. Diagnosis of Kidney disorders thru Urine samples

Diagnosis of Kidney disorders thru Urine samples?
okay so i had this lab wheree i had 4 urine samples. and i had to determine which had diabetes mellitus, insipidus and brights disease. we tested the urine sample with benedict solution, the pH of the urine, and mixing biuret reagent. How would i be able to determine which samples are with what disease. Anything in paticular i am looking for?

It would be great if you had a chance to do some microscopic analysis, you could look for blood or kidney casts and that would make it easy to pick out the Brights Disease. As for the mellitus and insipidus is there anyway you can run a glucose test? What was the pH you got for the samples. Is this for a class?
2 :
A blood work should also be performed, to check your creatinine and BUN. Best of luck!

Green Tea, Coffee, and Wine

Green Tea, Coffee, and Wine?
Is too much of these for long periods of time beneficial? Green Tea Benefits: Lower Cancer Risk: breast, lung, colon, prostate, cervical, ovarian, mesothelioma, esophageal, stomach. Prevent Heart Disease: lowers cholesterol, prevents artery blockages, lowers blood pressure. Speed Up Weight Loss: fat blocker, boost metabolism, increase endurance, anti-fatigue. Protect Brain Function: memory, stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons. Defend Immune System: flu, salmonella, common cold, HIV-AIDS. More Health Conditions Improved: including anti-aging, acne, allergies, body odor, sleep apnea, osteoporosis. Coffee Benefits: Coffee appears to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout. Wine Benefits: According Researcher Serge Renaud and his colleagues from the University of Bordeaux, moderate wine consumption reduces death rate because of all causes by 30%. Heart related death rates can decrease by 35%. Cancer related deaths can be reduced by 18-24% by wine. Researchers at the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland have found out how wine reduces the risks of strokes. According to researchers Dr. Wilhelm Vetter and his colleagues, alcohol present in the wine is beneficial when taken during meal time. It reduces the growth of pathways to the heart called arteries by 20%. Growth in the size of these pathways can cause heart attacks and strokes. A similar study on the same topic by Israeli researcher Fuhrman and his colleagues found that drinking red wine along with meal reduces a harmful substance called LDL cholesterol by 20%. Rise in this substance indicate higher fat levels in the body. A Dutch study reports that the same practice of drinking red wine along with meals stops clotting of blood in the pathways to the heart. Researcher Gary Curhan and his colleagues from Harvard University conducted a study on 81,000 nurses. They wanted to know the impact of different beverages like tea, coffee, fruit juices, wine, water etc on their health. Out of the 17 beverages included in the study, wine was found to reduce the risk of kidney stone formation by 50%. This finding was again confirmed by researcher Curhan and colleagues in 1996 when they found that wine consumption reduces the risks of kidney stone formation by 39%. A 16 years of research study by Dutch researcher Dr. Thomas Truelsen of Copen-hagen University Hospital, reports that moderate consumption of wine reduces the risks of strokes. Research study on wine in Italy concluded that light to moderate wine consumption do not allow the build up of fats in the pathways of heart. A team of researchers from the University of Illinois has found that a compound called resveratrol can stop the growth of cancer cells in humans. Would having all three of these daily for a long period of time be triple beneficial or would the combination not mix well and be worse for you?

Too much coffee is not good in my opinion, green tea is much better. Coffee dosn't have that many benefits anyway. Too much wine is not too good either, but one cup a day might be okay.

Taken in moderation there is no reason why these three substances cannot be of benefit in providing health benefits to many people. They might prove especially beneficial to people who already know that there is a family proclivity for certain medical conditions. They are counter-indicated in some conditions, however, and their side effects must be considered. Green tea (black tea as well since it is just an older version of the same tea leaf) can be beneficial.not only for the antioxidant benefit but also for its effect on ROS (reactive oxygen species) and nitric oxide. Remember, however, that caffeine is also present so in effect you will be getting the "coffee" benefits as well as the polyphenol benefits. http://parkinsonsfocustoday.blogspot.com/2009/08/is-it-true-what-they-say-about-black.html The Hawaii study has already demonstrated the long term benefits of moderate caffeine intake in men to at least delay onset of Parkinson's disease and possibly act as a preventative. http://parkinsonsfocustoday.blogspot.com/2010/10/glutamate-caffeine-gene-and-world.html Keep in mind that overindulgence may work in opposition to the protection offered by caffeine especially women/ http://parkinsonsfocustoday.blogspot.com/2008/11/coffeetea-or-me-parkinsons-patient.html It is important to understand that the benefits of reservatrol may be offset by the fact that it is a blood thinner as well as a polyphenol; therefore existing medical conditions must be considered. Muscadine grape seed has high levels of reservatrol which is one of compounds in red wine which is believed to reduce the risk of abnormal cell growth. While there is an overlap in some of the neuroprotection offered by green tea, caffeine and red wine, there is enough difference to suggest that judicious inclusion of all three is a regular diet can be beneficial. The interesting thing is that the benefits may never be seen. By observing one individual - in many cases yourself - It is difficult to see what does not present itself. That is why studies are so important. In a large study there will be the expectation that a certain percent of the participants will develop a medical condition. If the percentages do not correlate at the end of the study, there seems to be an indication that there has been an influencing effect. Again, in moderation, there could be significant benefit. Caffeine is not found in just coffee or tea. It would be wise to avoid soda/pop carbonated drinks which can contain caffeine but a reasonable amount of dark chocolate might be a fine substitute. What this does not suggest is that you can increase your consumption of foods which are known to contain excess amounts of harmful fats. http://www.americanheart.org/downloadable/heart/1232489114784Fats%20%20beneficial%20vs%20harmful.pdf

Chronic Kidney Disease The kidneys also produce hormones responsible for controlling blood pressure and the production and release of red blood cells by the bone marrow, which prevents anemia. The blood reaches the kidneys via the renal arteries that within the kidney are divided into smaller and smaller vessels until they form meandering of fine vases which are the glomeruli.

Based on much research available on the www and on >50 links to university, health and government, including the USDA, all put together on res-juventa. com, I think the answer to your question is Yes, it must be beneficial and the combination of them should not be harmful. Moreover, based on the cited research a good natural, (Spanish) grape based resveratrol product, made from the pulp, the seeds, the skin and the stem of the (Spanish) grapes - which contain trans- and cis-resveratrol, catechin, gallic acid, quercetin, pterostilbene, malvidin, peonidin, petunidin, delhpinidin and cyanidin - such as res-juventa and others, may actually, in single product, address all areas of concern mentioned by you. Some of the research is still in a relatively early stage and I would therefore not (yet) recommend synthetic, high dose (1000mg and more) products. But as long as you stay with a natural, FDA monitored product (look for a FDA registration number on the label; not the product is tested, as FDA does not directly test dietary supplements, but the import and the labeling are monitored) in a range of 350 - 500 mg, it seems to be o.k. This provides all the benefits of a bottle of wine or two a day, without any of the potentially negative effects of alcohol.

For those of you that have jumped on the negative bandwagon, all of this information has been well documented in medical journals. I did both with my twins, breast and bottle. On alcohol they have warnings because it is a dangerous substance, so is formula. It is undeniable that it kills 1.5 million children per year. What the hell is this? Hey troll thanks for joining just yesterday....
2 :
I'm confused.... what product? Baby formula? It is also important to note that all of these conditions are possible with breastfed babies too. I know because I was breastfed and I have/had a number of these conditions.
3 :
It is people like you who make mothers who are incapable of producing milk or mothers of premature children feel like bad parents. There are women in the world who would do anything to breastfeed their child but cannot due to circumstances out of their control. Your narrow mindedness makes me absolutely sick to my stomach and I hope that no one who reads this feels badly, as that was obviously your intent.
4 :
Appendicitis? Link please to research linking formula with appendicitis?
5 :
Do you think breastfeeding activists should be able to scaremonger formula feeding parents? If the answer is yes, then sure.
6 :
Absolutely, and of course many more than you have suggested. AND it needs a big ol' black box just like cigarettes (I live in Canada no sure what other countries have this is what I am talking about: http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.cdc.gov/PCD/issues/2007/apr/images/06_0024.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.cdc.gov/PCD/issues/2007/apr/06_0024.htm&h=1151&w=443&sz=84&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=C19IM9F3AkyRVM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=58&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcanadian%2Bcigarette%2Bpackage%2Bwarnings%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/824955.jpg%3Fv%3D1%26c%3DViewImages%26k%3D2%26d%3D17A4AD9FDB9CF1936808AB6AB7C5FBAB4E177BF6F1632E1D284831B75F48EF45&imgrefurl=http://www.jamd.com/image/g/824955&h=354&w=487&sz=37&hl=en&start=2&tbnid=Y9ORP5TAuPvfxM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=129&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcanadian%2Bcigarette%2Bpackage%2Bwarnings%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX ) However my biggest issue is with hospitals handing out formula products (coupons, gift bags, etc). Seriously you don't see McDonald's getting the hospitals to push their product. You don't even see hospitals pushing vitamins, gyms, cars, carseats, safety products, stop smoking aids, etc. My other problem is that most parents are unaware that POWDERED infant formula is not a sterile product and should basically not be used. And if you are going to use it you have to follow very strict handling procedures. http://www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/micro/pif2007/en/
7 :
please peddle your propaganda elsewhere...the mothers on this board, whether BF or formula feeding don't need you shoving this down their throats...you aren't helping anyone.
8 :
If you can't breastfeed I recommend home-made formula. There are a lot of recipes for home-made formula that are considered safe.
9 :
No because none of those are true. You can't pin ear infections and other situations exclusively on formula at all. That is the most UNINFORMED and ignorant statement I've ever heard or read. My son was a formula baby and he NEVER had any of those things. He's a healthy happy toddler now on solid table food alone and he does great. He still does NOT have any of those things. Besides that arthritis, diabetes, blood pressure, autism and many others are INHERITED not something you catch like a cold. SIDS is not caused by food either. It's caused by suffocation or inability to be properly breathing in one's sleep. Not all kids are prone to it, they have done studies to prove that SIDS babies usually have a family history of SIDS all ready. So should it be mandatory NO. It isn't true and people that believe this are idiots that have been brainwashed. There is also no proof that every kid that is breastfed won't develop these problems as a result. I've known just as many kids who were breast fed that have asthma and respiratory problems, constipated continually, won't eat later on when they start solids and other problems. Things my formula fed son NEVER dealt with. You can't generalize and say if you feed this or that your kid will have this or that because of the later. That's like saying all kids born with red hair will be killers when they grow up or kids with blonde hair are all stupid and ditzy and brunettes will have all the brains and success. There is NO PROOF to back those claims up and no proof to back up this nonsense about formula either. Stop researching on the internet through formula hate groups and use some solid proof. You sound like an idiot touting this as fact when it's not. It's a broad generalization that maybe .05% of children perhaps who may have had one of those happen that coincidentally may have been fed formula. It does NOT mean every kid that has ever been fed formula is a deformed unhealthy kid. Give me a break.
10 :
Yes, all of the things you listed are true but most people already know all of those things (even the ones who choose formula). I suppose it's the same as warnings on cigarettes. I think that it's much more important to tell people the benefits of breastfeeding and to stress that FORMULA IS NOT THE SAME AS BREASTMILK. There needs to be more support for breastfeeding women and less interference by formula companies. I do know that there are countries in Europe where formula is a prescription item (though I don't imagine the labels read like your question) and they have breasfeeding rates that are 8 to 9 times higher than the US's. I imagine that the correlation has more to do with support for breastfeeding than opposition to formula use, though.
11 :
What the heck is this? I believe breastfeeding is so wonderful and I am so glad to be able to bond with and nourish my baby in this way, but to fearmonger like this just to make people feel bad who can't breastfeed is dickheadish. And FYI, my mom formula fed my older sister and breastfed me. I have ulcerative colitis, got sick ALL the time every flu/cold season that would last weeks and weeks as a kid, and have hypothyroidism. My sister had/has none of these problems and was always the most physically fit. She even taught aerobics through college. She graduated top of her class and has a Master's degree. Boy, that formula really messed her up, huh? I did great, but was the kid with the health issues in our family, and I was BF for 18 months. I certainly don't think it's because of my mom's breastmilk. It's just shitty luck. Is breast best? I believe so. But that doesn't mean you should be writing a bunch of stupid crap to scare the shit out of people using formula just because you don't agree with them. Just leave people the hell alone and go troll somewhere else. Addendum: For powdered infant formulas, yes I believe there should be a clear notice that it is not sterile and can contain bacteria and steps to take to prepare it safely. Or perhaps only offer concentrated liquid that has been pasteurized and stop jacking up the price on that kind. But to say that all infant formula across the board is going to basically kill your baby is f'd up.
12 :
Bullshit. I agree that breastmilk is best, but some Mother's cant produce any, like those who have premature babies. Thanks for making them feel guilty for something that isn't their fault. Jerk.
13 :
I was a formula fed infant due to my mother acquiring a serious bacterial infection after her c-section (I was a breech baby). I have a VERY high IQ, hold multiple degrees in the life sciences, work in research, and am extremely healthy. Peddle your gunk-science elsewhere. This forum is to help parents, not to mis-inform or to scare.
14 :
stop judging you don't walk in anybodies shoes. people like you just need to keep there mouth shuts. for one not all people can breastfeed and it's not nice to post stuff like that to freak people out i have to say that you are very wrong.
15 :
So what you're saying is that if my son (who was breastfed for 8 months and has now been on formula for a month) develops ANY of these things, I can use formula as a scapegoat? If you believe all this garbage then DON'T USE IT. No one is forcing you. By the way, he also has a better chance of developing juvenile diabetes through my family's genes as opposed to formula.
16 :
I think informed consent for use of infant formula is a good idea. I don't think the information you've posted in your question is defensible, however.

Do those who practice alternative medicine keep themselves aware of the advances of modern science

Do those who practice alternative medicine keep themselves aware of the advances of modern science?
The advances of science, particularly those in metabolism, genetics, and nanotechnology, promise unprecedented medical techniques that will revolutionize the practice of medicine in the coming years. Things like targeted drug delivery, RNA interference, patient specific therapy, gene therapy, stem cell therapy, cloning, etc, will do so much in the fight against disease. As an example, work on T-cell engineering, combined with advances in our understanding of cellular communication in the immune system, will soon allow physicians to expose immune cells to particular antigens and tell them to attack and kill any cell that has it, or not to. Imagine what such techniques could do for cancer, or organ transplantation. We could train immune cells to target specific cancer cell lines, and they will wipe them out with ease. We could transplant organs from any person into any person. This is a tiny fraction of the possibilities promised by the advances of immune based therapy, and there are so many more fields. I could go on for days about the future of modern medicine. The ability to deliver RNA molecules to specific cells is already becoming a reality. Imagine the ease with which diseases like Type I diabetes mellitus, or cystic fibrosis could be treated when we can simply stick RNA into the cell that will activate the necessary genes, or serve as a template for the missing proteins. Imagine how quickly disease like Huntington's will be wiped out. Will the alternative practioners stay in the loop as modern science advances? If they elect the not to, how long do they really think they'll have a customer base?

The short answer is no, as they think they know better than thousands of dedicated and highly educated scientists, simply because it is "their body" Anybody who uses homeopathy for example, is ignoring 200 years of scientific progress which invalidates the entire premise of homeopathy. It is ironic that these same people who reject science when it comes to their personal health, are quite happy fly in airplanes and use personal computers without any sense of misgiving or second guessing.
2 :
A very good question. I would say no, and in my experience alties are anti-science. Just look at homeopathy. They will only cite science when it works to their advantage. They rather use pseudoscience to promote their quackery. They will twist and misreport the real science, like acupuncturists do. And they still use the appeal to tradition fallacy - eg; some folk remedy has been used for thousands of years so it must work. Keep in mind that traditional homeopathy and chiropractic rejects germ theory.
3 :
apparently your faith in medical "science" is strong. many have learned, however, often through bitter personal experience of it's failures, that it offers no real hope for restoring their health. they are correct, for the simple reason that most medical procedures neither find not correct the cause of most health problems, and they never will. that is not the purpose of medicine. medicine has promised endless "breakthroughs" and "miracles", but the reality is that you cannot restore health by merely suppressing effects/symptoms, not correcting the cause. when is the last time you heard of some disease foundation announce that a cure had been found and they were shutting down and turning away contributions? never. and you never will. the human genome project was going to unlock the secret to curing all manner of illness. more false hope for the gullible. wise up.
4 :
I can barely keep up with the new stuff myself! No, the alt med advocates have no idea on the advances of science since they barely know science anyway. They will be left behind eventually.
5 :
your bias just oozes through your pores. So let me set you straight, pal! Alternative medicine has historically been ahead of allopathic medicine for advances in healing. One big problem that you guys have is that the FDA takes many years to approve a new drug while the targeted people continue to die. And when it is approved it causes unexpected (and expected) sickness and death because Big Pharma plays with the clinical trial results and hides the dangerous side effects. Alternative medicine does not work that way. Holistic practitioners and researchers comb all the new research for innovative ways to treat disease, years before mainstream medicine wakes up. How many years did the medical establishment "torture" Dr. Semilweis before they finally had to admit that hand washing was necessary to prevent the spread of disease ? Keep your head in the sand. Natural medicine goes back 5,000 years and it has stood the test of time despite modern medicine spreading false media stories about how dangerous natural medicine is.
6 :
If they were interested in science they wouldn't practice alternative "medicine". The two are opposites.
7 :
It is very strange that they happily use computers and other technology, yet for the most important thing they have (their health) suddenly the only thing that will do is disproven 5000 year old voodoo! Despite the evil that is Big Pharma, and everyone 'getting' cancer etc, the lifespan in the west has never been higher and has increased by 30 years in the last 100 years alone. If alt med had that sort of success rate, in 5000 years our lifespan would have increased by 450 years! If anything, alt med is anti-progress, certainly many on here are happy to quote antiquated practises as having some kind of modern relevance and indeed, this is where many of the scams such as colon cleansing etc stem from.
8 :
I do! :) My background is in genetics and microbiology... so the areas of science to which you refer are particularly of interest to me. But my own interests and proclivities aside, in Canada and the US NDs are required to do "continuous learning" to maintain our licensure (just like MDs.) Most of us have undergraduate or masters degrees in science (some are PhD-holders, others did their undergrad training in other fields and then completed the pre-req's as a "tag on.") Most of us subscribe to several major scientific/medical journals, we conduct regular research when developing treatment protocols, etc. Advances in science are equally of interest to us as to anyone in the medical field. And NDs are at the forefront of many of the precise studies to which you're referring!

Joe you have a valid question. You need to define "alternative practitioners". If you are referring to licensed integrative or alternative physicians, the answer is without a doubt YES!!!!!!!. I start clinical rounds in surgery after the first of the year with my long term goal of stem cell regeneration research. Most of my colleagues are brilliant, passionate clinicians and scientists. Skep Doc: We are highly educated scientists. It is most interesting when mainstream science actually validates what we have been saying for centuries. One recent example--PRP "platelet-rich-plasma" and ACP "autologus-conditioned-plasma" Ref: American Journal of Sports Medicine. Gary: There is a place for acupuncture and homeopathy and there is valid science for these modalities. As with anything there is a time and place for it to be used effectively. And you are right in your assumption that many people using these modalities over step the boundaries. Angry doc: We know science and science basics as well as any scientist or practioner. It takes more education for us to learn and practive integrative/alternative medicine. Think about it--you have to know everything mainstream AND everything alternative and have good deductive reasoning skills.
