Diabetes take home quiz. must pass

Diabetes take home quiz. must pass!?
Hello all, i'm a student needing help with his diabetes project and was wondering if this board will be so kind enough as to help me with some of my questions. all help will be greatly appreciated. 1. Describe how the first gen of oral hypoglycemic agents work? 2. Explain why this did not address the needs of many people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus? 3. Identify 3 ways in which the second gen of oral glycemic agents work. 4. Explain the body's response or action when the cells are starving in a person who has IDDM. 5. Fat is broken down in order to make energy, which results in the by product of ketones. Regarding this process, how is it physiologically possible to turn one nutrient into another? 6. Describe the diet therapy for clients with diabetes mellitus in terms of proportion of nutrient. 7. explain how the food exchange list type diet works. 8. Illness causes an increase in blood sugar, what action is essential to undertaker when ill? 9. What are reasons that oral hypoglycemic agents are contraindicated for people with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus? thank you everybody for taking the time to help me.

Soon after eating a meal what happens to pancreatic hormone secretions

Soon after eating a meal what happens to pancreatic hormone secretions?
How does this change hours later? How would this response be different in a person with type 2 diabetes mellitus? Would insulin be very effective in helping to take up nutrients in a person with type 2 diabetes?

In contrast to the endocrine pancreas, which secretes hormones into the blood, the exocrine pancreas produces digestive enzymes and an alkaline fluid (referred to as pancreatic juice), and secretes them into the small intestine through a system of exocrine ducts in response to the small intestine hormones secretin and cholecystokinin. Digestive enzymes include trypsin, chymotrypsin, pancreatic lipase, and pancreatic amylase, and are produced and secreted by acinar cells of the exocrine pancreas. Specific cells that line the pancreatic ducts, called centroacinar cells, secrete a bicarbonate- and salt-rich solution into the small intestine. The pancreas is also the main source of enzymes for digesting fats (lipids) and proteins.

Diabetes mellitus, often simply referred to as diabetes—is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the body does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. This high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger). There are three main types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes: results from the body's failure to produce insulin, and presently requires the person to inject insulin. (Also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM for short, and juvenile diabetes.) Type 2 diabetes: results from insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly, sometimes combined with an absolute insulin deficiency. (Formerly referred to as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM for short, and adult-onset diabetes.) Gestational diabetes: is when pregnant women, who have never had diabetes before, have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy. It may precede development of type 2 DM. Other forms of diabetes mellitus include congenital diabetes, which is due to genetic defects of insulin secretion, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, steroid diabetes induced by high doses of glucocorticoids, and several forms of monogenic diabetes. All forms of diabetes have been treatable since insulin became available in 1921, and type 2 diabetes may be controlled with medications. Both type 1 and 2 are chronic conditions that usually cannot be cured. Pancreas transplants have been tried with limited success in type 1 DM; gastric bypass surgery has been successful in many with morbid obesity and type 2 DM. Gestational diabetes usually resolves after delivery. Diabetes without proper treatments can cause many complications. Acute complications include hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, or nonketotic hyperosmolar coma. Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure, retinal damage. Adequate treatment of diabetes is thus important, as well as blood pressure control and lifestyle factors such as smoking cessation and maintaining a healthy body weight.

The liver, kidney, intestine, and platelets contain the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase, which produces glucose from glucose-6-phosphate and is the final step in the production of glucose via gluconeogenesis. This enzyme is absent in other tissues. Glucose that is metabolized peripherally may therefore be converted back to glucose or to hepatic glycogen via gluconeogenesis with lactate as the primary substrate.7 This is known as the Cori cycle. In type 2 diabetes, excessive hepatic glucose output contributes to the fasting hyperglycemia. Increased gluconeogenesis is the predominant mechanism responsible for this increased glucose output, while glycogenolysis has not been shown to be increased in patients with type 2 diabetes.8 Hyperglucagonemia has been shown to augment increased rates of hepatic glucose output, probably through enhanced gluconeogenesis pancreatic a-amylase This enzyme is extremely important in mammals, catalyzing the degradation of starch and glycogen to be used as energy. In addition, the inhibition of a -amylase is effective in controlling diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Tin

Cookie induced diabetes

Cookie induced diabetes?
Roughly how many Oreos can I consume before I develop diabetes mellitus type 2? I just ate between 40 and 45. Should I forget about it or go buy some insulin? Note: assume my diet is fairly balanced otherwise

None. Diabetes is in no way caused by sugar - any form of it. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease. Basically all of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas are attacked and can no longer make insulin, resulting in Type 1 Diabetes. Type 2 can be caused by a number of things. A sedentary lifestyle, weight, and genetics can all contribute to developing type 2 diabetes, but they themselves are not direct causes of it, nor are they the only contributors.
2 :
As long as that is not a how you normally eat, you should have no long term side-effects from gorging yourself on cookies. Diabetes is not caused by food
3 :
3bn. Just relax and enjoy your life for goodness sake!!! Cookies are not going to kill you. Eating 20+ cookies with every fried chicken/pizza meal and never exercising for 25 years, THAT might kill you. If yu worry about that, you'll die of stress before you get diabetes.
4 :
You don't get diabetes from eating cookies. Why do people think you can get diabetes from eating sweets? I've been a diabetic for 27 years (I've had it since I was 11years old). I didn't eat alot of sweets as a kid. Diabetes is caused when your pancreas either doesn't make any insulin or doesn't' make enough. This is not caused from eating 50 Oreos. There are many causes family history, weight, they have even done studies thinking it may be caused from a virus. BTW if you take insulin and you don't have diabetes it will kill you. Your blood sugar will drop so quickly you will go into shock and die. Why would you want to get diabetes? I've lived with it most of my life and it isn't fun. You have to watch what and how much you eat. You have to test your blood sugar often. It effects so many parts of your body. I've lost a lot of feeling in my feet and hands. My Uncle who was a diabetic and didn't take care of himself lost half of his right foot before he died of a heart attack (Diabetics have heart troubles). You can lose your sight etc....... Besides you have to have a perscription for most insulins today.

How doctors will cure diabetes

How doctors will cure diabetes?
How Endocrinologist doctor will cure patients with diabetes mellitus type 2?

there is no cure. they are trying implants, but all they can do is medicate you to keep you blood sugar normal
2 :
There are antidiabetic drugs used to treate type 2 diabetes, in some cases diet and exercise can restore insulin sensitivity. This seems like a complex disease to cure.
3 :
Right now, there is no cure. However, researchers at the Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto have discovered that pain neurons in the pancreas of mice with type 1 Diabetes, could be removed and overnight, the diabetes disappeared! What this means is that for years, researchers thought that the cause of diabetes was endocrinological and metabolic, when it fact, it looks like both types of Diabetes are actually Neurological. Which is also why this new medication(Byetta) is working wonders on Type 2 Diabetics.. because the medication is derived from the saliva of gila monsters.. which happens to be a neurotoxin. It is all very promising, and the researchers have begun human testing here in Toronto. Hope this helps.
4 :
I personally didn't know they cure it. It's called portion control and exercise maybe some Type 2's can lose weight and watch what and how much they eat and not have to take the meds. Not so for us Type 1's though.

Here's a little different take on the subject of diabetes, and I hope it helps-- There are many things you can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing. Natural remedies are quite effective, and include: Cinnamon Bitter Melon Gymnema Sylvestre Nopal cactus American Ginseng Fenugreek Chromium picolinate Cinnamon regulates glucose, and has a polyphenol compound called MHCP that mimics insulin and activates cell receptor sites. Everything on the above list has a use in fighting diabetes. If you are serious about learning how to use these herbs and not falling victim to diabetes needlessly, I suggest getting a copy of-- "One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313 The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work which was first availale in February 2005. We both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject. You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy cheap. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what made the difference for me and mine. Best of luck.

To any Nurses or Doctors: a question about possible beginning of S/S of diabetes II

To any Nurses or Doctors: a question about possible beginning of S/S of diabetes II?
I know the pathophysiology for the cause of type 2 diabetes mellitus, but I am not sure of this problem one of my friends is having. They have always been pretty healthy, but are currently in school and very busy with school, stress, exams, etc. They have mostly always followed a very healthy diet and used to jog and exercise daily for years and years, but now it is different. To the point, sometimes when they eat alot of sweets, for instance like a cupcake with lots o frosting, their face becomes minorly flushed, and the cheeks feel very hot and slightly tingly. I am aware that wih insulin resistance, and my hypothesis is that the sweet glucose from this cupcake would not be able to get into the cell, and is just in the interstitial spaces, or whatever, and that is what is causing the flushing. Do you think it sounds like the possibility of the beginning of type 2 (insulin resistant) diabetes mellitus? Or because of the strict diet, their body can't adjust to high amts of sugar?

I would guess some kind of food allergy before diabetes. I am not aware of hyperglycemia causing the symptoms you described. Having to drink fluid and pee frequently is a sign of diabetes, among others. If DM is a concern, a fasting blood glucose level could be taken in a clinic.

main symptom will be sudden weight gain or loss, urinating more than usual... feel tired very often.... dizziness after having some food(like high sugar food) these r the symptoms that my mother in law had and then when v checked she was diabetic....
2 :
Treating diabetes is best carried out during the early stages of the disease when the consequences can still be controlled and minimized. Such an approach will require an early determination of diabetic symptoms. These diabetic symptoms are: * Extreme and excessive thirst that is quite abnormal * Hunger even when meals have recently been taken * Frequent urination * Fatigue easily creeps in * Excessive weight loss at such a short period of time * Smeared vision * Nagging impatience that has recently been developed If you are interested in more info on treatment for type 2 diabetes, you may wish to refer to this site : http://diabetic.best-health-remedy.com/
