The number one issue is noncompliance with the drug and medication regime. This is caused by the patient choosing not to take their blood sugar at prescribed times, follow the dietary and medication guidelines in spite of the consequences. Teens are the worst.Diabetic coma, etc develops as a result.
2 :
diabetes doesnt cause any other disease to appear but have it symptoms of its own. but MS has been found in many diabetics like my dad.
3 :
kidney problems, blindness, poor circulation, poor wound healing, amputation of legs, arms, feet and heart problems.

Discuss the patient’s diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. How would you diagnosis a child with this

Discuss the patient’s diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. How would you diagnosis a child with this?
Case Study #1: Diabetes Hannah is a 10-year-old girl who has recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. She is a 4th grade student at Hendricks Elementary School. Prior to her diagnosis, Hannah was very involved in sports and played on the girls volleyball team. Her mother is concerned about how the diagnosis will affect Hannah. 1. Discuss the patient’s diagnosis. Include a definition of the actual disease or condition. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus once known as “juvenile onset” diabetes or “insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus,” is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism caused by inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas or faulty use of insulin by the cells. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert sugar (glucose) into energy. Although type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, it typically appears during childhood or adolescence. 2. Identify the factors which could have caused or lead to the particular disease or condition. 3. Describe the signs and symptoms which are associated with the disease or condition. 4. Discuss the diagnostic testing that is usually performed in order to formally diagnose the particular disease or condition. 5. Identify the appropriate treatment (including therapies, medications, etc) which the patient may be prescribed for his/her particular diagnosis. 6. Discuss potential barriers to therapy which the patient may experience due to their unique situation. 7. Discuss alternative treatments which may also benefit the patient. 8. Describe the typical prognosis for a patient with the disease or condition. 9. Identify patient teaching which would benefit the patient in your case study. I have to do a paper for school and looking for a good website to answer these question.

If Type 1 diabetes mellitus depend on external insulin for control, what did they do before insulin discovered

If Type 1 diabetes mellitus depend on external insulin for control, what did they do before insulin discovered?
did people just die???

Eat low amounts of sugar
2 :
Try to eat a low carb diet - if any carbs at all.. but yes eventually would die of complications, pretty quick too. Most things in your body eventually break down into glucose, what your body needs to run, but because of the lack of insulin, it stayed in the blood stream. I remember my endo telling me that w/o insulin (at the time I was diagnosed) I would have been dead in a year without the creation of insulin outside the body. Scary times.. we're pretty lucky. I'd rather be diabetic now, then back then, that's for sure!
3 :
They used to be put on a low or no carb diet. They lived as long as their body could hold out and then they died.
4 :
Those who had diabetes before synthetic insulin was developed were almost certain to have a short life span. If they were able to control it by diet, they stood a better chance, but even in 1972 my grandfather died of diabetes-related disease. It increased (and still does, if not treated) your risk of heart attack, stroke, gangrene, blindness, and many other diseases.
5 :
Check out diabetes history on line. It is very interesting. Prior to the 1920s, kids with diabetes could only eat veggies boiled and rinsed 3X. They usually starved to death. I have a first addition book on diabetes by Dr. Joslin who clearly states that medication is of no help in controlling diabetes.
6 :
Yes, in fact, they just died. The brain is one of the human organs that can only use glucose for food. Because insulin is the only way to move glucose from your blood to your cells, they basically starved to death once they stopped producing insulin.

Can anyone make a concept map out of this

Can anyone make a concept map out of this?
John Rocke is a 45 yr old divorced man with no children. He has a history of diabetes mellitus and poor control of blood glucose levels. Mr. Rocke is unemployed and currently receives unemployment compensation. He lives alone is a second floor apartment. Mr. Rocke had developed gangrene in the toe and failed to seek prompt medical attention; as a result, a left below the knee amputation was necessary. Mr. Rocke is in his second postoperative day and his vital signs are stable. The stump is splinted and has a soft dressing. The wound is approximating well without signs of infection. He has not performed ROM exercises or turning since his surgery, complaining of severe pain. When the nurse goes into the room, he yells, "Get out!" I don't want anyone to see me like this" No one has visited him since his hospitalization. He is tolerating an 1800-kcal American Diabetes Association diet and is using a urinal independently. He is on blood glucose with reg. insulin subcutaneously.

i checked on the internet for this john rocke that has any history of diabetes there are about 35 john rocke living right now in all of them married in have chikdren you need to check your info out more better geez but none of them have any diabetes at all ever
8 :
Concept map is foreign to me. However, I see problems to be solved in the fact he is now an amputee on a second floor apartment. I see he has no support structure in place. I see he will get pneumonia and die if he does not start moving and turning. He will become more stiff if he does not do range of motion exercise. Pain management needs to be looked at, and possibly social services intervention if not for the above things to see where his thought processes are....suicidal, depressed, pain??? Post hospital placement needs to be addressed. He needs his resources evaluated as far as just being on the workers comp. Was it an injury to the toe that caused the gangrene? Hope that helps. And I would just find a nurse that will hit him head on with these issues.
9 :
A concept map is a learning tool that is similar to a paradigm or flowchart. You didn't say if you were a nurse or med student and there's a significant difference in the information one would put in a concept map. Based on your presentation, I'll hazard a guess that you're a nursing student, so the emphasis is going to be on psycho-social issues and ADL. Here's an excellent site that might help you construct yours: http://cord.org/txcollabnursing/onsite_conceptmap.htm
10 :
I can do that but I can't draw it out in here. You are talking about a Cognet concept map right?

What is the different of treatment between diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2

What is the different of treatment between diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2?

Diabetes 1 your body produces no insulin and you must take insulin to keep your blood sugar under control (diet, excercise and oral hypoglycemics will sometimes be given to help control sugars). Diabetes 2 your body does not produce enough insulin so treatment is aimed at helping your body control sugar ... start by controlling diet, then add oral hypoglycemics (metformin, glyburide, avandia etc...) and insulin only if necessary. HbAic test to see wether treatment is helping with longterm sugar control. Hope this helps, C
2 :
So far there has not yet found a cure to cure diabetes, but proper medication, good diet and some changes in lifestyle can help people with diabetes to lead a virtually normal life while avoiding long-term problems and complications often associated with the disease.
